Weather conditions: |
| According to reports of local people low amount of snow was accumulated during winter. Spring was relatively cool, but with frequent periods of warm weather. Flood was low due to low snow amount and prolonged thaw. By 8 June rivers were already in principal river-beds, and water was rapidly retreating. June was warm and relatively dry with mean day temperature occasionally dropping to +2-+5øC, but not below freezing point. Temperature and precipitation in July were normal for the area. Events with apparent negative impact on bird numbers and reproductive success were not observed.

Breeding conditions:
|
| Broad-billed Sandpiper is rather common in the Ponoi depression, and a nest with 3 eggs was found on 17 June. The depression also supports nesting population of White-tailed Eagle, which number approximates 15 pairs (11 active nests were found). Weather was favourable during nesting period, and predation pressure was unlikey to significantly affect nesting success.

Summary
of fauna studies: |
| Transect counts of breeding birds were carried out in the extensive marshy area in the middle reaches of the Ponoi River (Ponoi depression). Focused seareches for nests of birds of prey and endangered species were undertaken in the surveyed area. Additional surveys are planned in summer 2002.
